Even though she enjoys writing as her activity, she must hide it from John because of his hated towards the idea of her doing any sort of activity, There comes John, and I must put this away, he hates to have me write a word (Gilman). The protagonist would love to go out and do various activities outside or inside but in different areas of the house, but she is unable to due to her husband constantly forcing her to do otherwise. The protagonist is challenged physically throughout the story but is also psychologically challenged. The protagonist in the story suffered from neurasthenia. Neurasthenia is fatigue that is felt both physically and mentally, and the fatigue is followed with headaches. The origin of fatigue and headaches are unknown but are similar symptoms that are found in patients with depression (Neurasthenia). Neurasthenia is also closely related to chronic fatigue syndrome. Both diagnoses are very similar and seem to be a matter of different names rather than different symptoms. A person grows fearful of something and constantly obsesses over it because of the persons constant fear towards it (Boll). The protagonist begins to hallucinate during her treatment. She starts to see someone in the yellow wallpaper in her room and she grows fearful of it. Anxiety sets in as her hallucinations progress. Mental fatigue is when someone is always feeling sleepy and cannot focus very well on their work. Physical fatigue is when someone is unable to carry out a task because of their body feeling tired and weak. There was no one she could look for help with. She was in complete isolation from the outside world. She was truly alone with just her husband trapped in her own home with no free will. She could not talk about her condition because it would worsen but it would have psychologically helped her to talk about it and find a way through it and have some support. It was hard for the protagonist and women of her time to make decisions because of social challenges they faced. Women were expected to oversee the needs of the house. They were to keep the house clean and neat during their time 1800s. Women were also in charge of taking care of the children and teach them how to grow up and be respectable men. Women had no rights and just listened to what their husbands told them to do. They were encouraged to learn housekeeping qualities instead of educational ones (Hartman). The protagonist knew how to write so it suggests she had some type of education. It is unknown what was her role in society was as she was to not do anything during her treatment. Because of how society worked, women were trapped in their homes. They could not do anything else but stay inside and clean. Their minds were programmed to think that they could only grow up to be a housewife (Hartman). They were trapped much like the protagonist was. The protagonist was trapped in her own home and inside of her mind. Her only way of escape was through her writing. Women did not have equal rights as men and were second-class citizens. They were thought to be inferior to their male counterparts (Hartman). Having to be so sly about it, or else meet with heavy opposition (Gilman), if the protagonist would have tried to stand up against, she would have been taken down by her husband and brother because of their superiority. Women also did not have the right to vote. Their leaders were chosen by men only. The life of a woman alone in their society would be hard to live in without a male. Men saw it as preposterous to even think about giving women rights. They saw it as unnecessary. Men would respond by saying that women belonged inside the house. The subject of womens suffrage was met with heavy opposition (Hartman). It was a mans job to work and provide for the family and for women to stay in their homes and cook and clean. That was the norm for the people in the 1800s. Both women and men agreed on how society was structured and it worked for them (Lange). The protagonist and Johns past shed some light on how their life was before her treatment. The husband was a physician, If a physician of high standing. . . assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter. . . what is one to do (Gilman). He was of high standing, so it suggests he is well known. It also states he insists to their family that she is okay meaning they listened to his word as a physician and husband, but if she did give her say on her condition then it then suggests he has the superior influence as a male. Much like circumstances were with women and men in the 1800s. Women tried to fight for suffrage in the late 1800s but did not gain enough support. Many men and women still supported the idea of men and womens roles to stay the same as it was before. Suffragists were met with opposition from women themselves too. Many suggested it was because they did not have time to vote due to being isolated in their home. Others suggest it could have just been the lack of knowledge in politics to understand the movements. Women had it hard during the 1800s and if they fought back, they would eventually lose. Just like women of her time, the protagonist was challenged with being inferior and could not make her own choices. Her decisions were made by her husband and backed up by her brother. In conclusion, the protagonist went mad due to the physical, psychological, and social challenges she had to face throughout her treatment. She was trapped in her home where she was to relax, but instead was to meet loneliness and despair. She had to endure the state of having to force herself to do everything her treatment required. She was isolated away from everything, including her family. Having no support only led for her to drown in an unbeatable psychological battle with herself. Already having to face her present psychological challenges, she had to face oncoming challenges that would surface due to culminating environmental stress. Further stress was unavoidable as male superiority put her against a wall that she could not breach. She could not talk about her condition as she would be silenced by her husband who only made her condition worse. Hallucinations would begin as she only drew deeper into depression and overtook her sense of reality. The yellow wallpaper in her roo m would become the center of her attention. Before, she found solace in writing about her experiences, but fatigue would later take over her body only causing her to steer away from writing. With chaos assuming control of her mind, the protagonist could not resist any longer and fell into insanity.

Today many people would say yes to this question, some women would be offended by this question, and some men would joke about this question. However, for decades this question has caused much controversy. Many years ago, women had different expectations and much less freedom than they have now, but eventually they decided that was not the way they should be living. There are many things that have contributed to this great rebellion of equal rights for women. Michael Warner The Ethics Of Sexual Shame Analysis
ââ¬Å"The Ethics of Sexual Shameâ⬠by Michael Warner explores how sexual autonomy can be realized for all people. Warner recognizes this in history, and points out the trend in regards to societal sexual ethics, in which a tendency of absolutism and prejudicial sexual norms are dominant in oneââ¬â¢s society. Because of this, sexual minorities struggle with shame and stigma that result in crushing their freedom and sometimes dignity. Warner argues that people need to defy the values that build these sexual hierarchies and accept all forms of sexual experiences, even if it is not what you prefer. Creative and Unique Writing The Life of Edgar Allan Poe
Often authorââ¬â¢s lives have an impact on their writing because of the way they see life. Edgar Allan Poe had constant struggles in his own life that shaped the way he wrote. His name brings to mind death and murders but there was more to him than that. He was a man with many challenges in his life that he had to overcome. Poe was born as Edgar Poe on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts. He was the second of three children. His siblings were Henry and Rosalie Poe. His parents, David and Elizabeth Poe, were traveling actors but his father abandoned his family two years after Poe was born and his mother died a year later. Many of the things that happened to Poe shaped the way that he wrote. He became a clerk and a newspaper writer but those jobs did not last long. Poe eventually became a sergeant major for artillery in the army and he also had many jobs in magazines but they did not last too long. During this period, fetal and infant death rates were at it highest [1]. The medical society did not believe consumption of alcohol was the cause of the high rise in birth defects at the time. With the repeal of the prohibition on alcohol in 1933, doctors believed it had beneficial effects to the point of intravenous treatments with alcohol were used to delay preterm labor. In the 1950s to 1960s, there was another rise in fetal birth defects called the ââ¬Å"thalidomide scareâ⬠. Thalidomide was used to relieve morning sickness experienced during pregnancy. This scare caused scientists to realize that certain types of drugs given during pregnancy, affected the development of the fetus. It wasnââ¬â¢t until 1973, when two pediatricians, David Smith and Kenneth Jones, whom specialized in dysmorphology, the stud y of abnormalities present at birth, published their article on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Clothing As An Insight Essay Countless people believe in the clich do not judge a book by its cover: but why not? Clothing often forms anothers first impression of one. It speaks of where a person has been and where they intend to go. Their appearance also illustrates a persons true self and aspirations. A man wearing torn jeans, dingy shirt, and old shoes might be thought of as poor or coming home from a hard days labor. However, a young woman in a Gucci dress with Versace pumps could be assumed to have access to a large amount of money. In The Prologue from the Canterbury Tales, Chaucer uses clothing as an insight into peoples ongoing adventure called life. In the Prologue, humbled by his life experiences, the Knight dresses plainly. Garbed in a stained coarse cotton tunic, the knight sits upon his horse. Seen in a different setting, the Knights attire would say little about his life as an honorable man. By humbling oneself, a true hero lends credence to the fact that flash is not always needed. His armor left dark smudges on his tunic. Humbling experiences cause humans to step back and analyze the fortune they have; they learn that they do not have to wear their achievements. Sometimes people boast their success through fine clothing. Unlike the flamboyant Yeomen, the distinguished knight wears old garments. The Yeomen succumbs to societys inclination that when he dresses the part he will become successful. He wears a coat with a green hood. From a low social standing, he believes that the better he looks the more successful he will become. Emphasis should be placed on ones achievements and inner self rather than outward appearance. A saucy brace is worn on his arm to protect it from the bow. At first glance, one would assume that he was a superior archer of high standings rather then a lowly Yeomen. Looks can be deceiving, but the illusion fades as ones true self shines through. Extravagant best describes the Yeomens style while plain and reserved best depicts the nun. Where Should I Take the SAT SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips While you're doing a lot to prepare for the SAT, you probably haven't given that much thought to the physical location of your test. However, that location could definitely affect your performance. Think about it ââ¬â have you ever had to take a test in a cramped classroom or in room without air conditioning? It probably didnââ¬â¢t exactly help your performance. So why would you take the SAT in sub-optimal conditions? Read our guide to choosing the best possible test location so you can do as well as possible. Two Search Methods Before we worry about choosing locations, you have to find out what those locations are. We will go over two methods to finding SAT locations ââ¬â one thatââ¬â¢s easy to use but less informative, and one thatââ¬â¢s harder to use but contains more info. Method One: College Boardââ¬â¢s Test Center Search College Boardââ¬â¢s Test Center Search lets you look up test centers by state or by city. Depending on where you live, this may give you all you need to know. The Test Center Search page allows you to search for SAT locations by state and city. Image via College Board. For example, Iââ¬â¢m from Utah. In the entire state, there are just nine testing locations for the next SAT, mostly at area colleges. Image via College Board. However, if you live in a state like Massachusetts with dozens of potential test sites, you may want to do a more fine-grained search. You can search by city, but remember to look up towns and suburbs near to you to see the most options. If youââ¬â¢re in a state with tons of choices, the second search method, which allows you to look by zip code, will likely be easiestâ⬠¦ Method Two: Begin to Register for the SAT For whatever reason, College Boardââ¬â¢s test location search within its registration process is more informative than its basic test search option. So to get access to the most efficient SAT location search, you have to go through the SAT registration system. Move through College Board's SAT registration process until you get to step 3, "Select Test Center." Image via College Board. You can enter your zip code (rather than search by only city or state) and see the options closest to you, including neighboring cities. This is much more efficient if you there are a lot of potential test sites near you. Image via College Board. You can also see who still has seats available for the test, which is important info if you know you need to register soon. You don't have to complete the registration to use the search tool. Also, live close to a state line? Consider options over the border, especially if rules/laws are different (some states require scores be reported to talent searches). Choosing a Test Site Now that you know how to search for a test center, you probably fall into one of two camps. In the first camp, letââ¬â¢s call it the Utah camp, your test location is entirely determined by proximity. This means that you have only one or two options based on where you live, so unfortunately you canââ¬â¢t optimize your test center beyond location. But if youââ¬â¢re in the second camp, let's call it the Massachusetts camp, you have many choices. So how do you make sure you pick the best possible test center? Your choice of test location depends on a few important factors, which we will cover in order of importance. How Far Do You Have to Travel? Basically, the closer you live to a test center, the better. You donââ¬â¢t want to risk having a morning-of traffic or weather crisis. Many students test at their high school if they can, but if you live far away from your high school, it might actually be better to see if there is a location closer to your home. Also consider that parking and drop-off around the center is likely going to be congested on the morning of the test, and plan accordingly. Add at least 10 minutes onto predicted travel time to account for this. Are You Familiar With the Test Site? Once youââ¬â¢re inside the center, youââ¬â¢ll be less stressed if you know how to get around. For example, if youââ¬â¢re testing in your own high school, even if youââ¬â¢re headed to a room youââ¬â¢ve never had a class in, youââ¬â¢ll likely be able to find it easily. However, if youââ¬â¢re in a university building and have to go looking for the room, or take a wrong turn, that could add unnecessary stress the morning of the SAT. If youââ¬â¢re heading to a new building on test day, either scope it out before test day or arrive early to give you ample time to get to your test room. Getting lost and ending up in a lonely hallway that looks like something out of The Shining probably won't help your test day jitters. Who's Going to Be There? Don't just think about where you're taking the SAT. Think about who is going to be there, too. If youââ¬â¢re taking the SAT at your high school or at a location with students from your high school, that could be good or bad, depending on your personality. Will seeing friends or classmates relax you, or stress you out? For some students, seeing their friends could help calm them down. Seeing familiar faces and having a moment to joke around before the test could alleviate stress. But for others, seeing their classmates could remind them of their competition for college and make them more stressed. Or seeing friends could be more distracting than helpful. Thereââ¬â¢s no right answer here. Just take your personal preferences into account. If you know that having your friends around will help, donââ¬â¢t worry about heading to your local high school. If you think it will be stressful for you, consider going to a test center more out of the way so you can focus better on the test. Any Test Center Problems? You should also consider some of the more nitty-gritty details of the testing center before making your choice. There are many factors that could make the test center itself good or bad. Are there windows in the test rooms? For some students, sitting by a window is distracting. For others, being in a windowless room feels suffocating. Are there heating/cooling issues? Taking a test in the sweltering June heat without A.C. would be miserable, but so would taking it in a freezing room in November. If youââ¬â¢re signed up for a winter or summer test date, in particular, make sure youââ¬â¢re in a room with decent temperature control. Any there issues like nearby construction? For example, if there is a noisy construction project going on by your high school, you might elect to go to farther location to make sure your test center will be quiet. Finally, think about desk size. Generally, the more space, the better, because youââ¬â¢ll be balancing the test book and the answer sheet. This can be tricky on those tiny desks some college rooms have. If youââ¬â¢re sensitive about your work space, try and sneak a peak at the test room before you sign up. Should I Just Test at My High School? After reading through all these possible factors, you might be thinking you should just test at your high school, since you know the most about it. For many students, this is a great option. Make sure to consider the following factors, though. Will familiar faces distract you? Like we discussed above, for some students, seeing friends and classmates on test day can be stressful. If you would prefer to be with a crowd of strangers, look into different locations. Is there a closer location you could go? Keep in mind the Saturday morning SAT commute is typically earlier than your high school commute. There might be unexpected traffic and parking issues at the school. If your high school is a ways away, see if there are closer testing locations. Are there known issues with your high school, like small desks or a nearby construction project? If anything about your high school is distracting for you, think about other locations. Finally, do you tend to lose focus in environments youââ¬â¢re used to? Some people prefer the ââ¬Å"blank slateâ⬠environment of a new testing center. Others like being in familiar environments for stressful, high-stakes testing. If none of the above are true, your high school could be the best option since youââ¬â¢re familiar with the location. Youââ¬â¢ll be less likely to run into morning-of problems simply because you know the building well. Other Tips Be aware of test center closings. Sometimes College Board has to close test centers due to weather or other reasons. Check your email carefully in the weeks and days leading up to the test in case something happens to your location. Drive to the testing location before the morning of the test if youââ¬â¢ve never been there. Make sure the route youââ¬â¢re using (or the route Google Maps is telling you to use) is accurate and gets you there. You donââ¬â¢t want to risk getting lost the morning before the test. If you have a long drive the morning of, pack breakfast with you to save time. You can also listen to music in the car (relaxing music if you need to calm down, pump-up music if you want to get amped) or review some notes to get your brain in gear. (But don't review notes if you're the one driving!) Finally, recognize you can change your location after registering, but thereââ¬â¢s a $28 fee and locations fill up the closer you get to the test. Emotive Response to Essays -- Emotion Essay
In tenth grade, everyone in Mrs. Dââ¬â¢s English class had to write an essay on an American author. No one was actually given a choice in the matter, nor was anyone allowed the option of choosing their author. That kind of option wouldnââ¬â¢t have meant much to me anyway, seeing as I, like many sophomores in high school, had no interest in anything even remotely intellectual. Fateââ¬â¢s ubiquitous hand dealt me Sherwood Anderson, a man I had never heard of (nor did I frankly care to know about). Despite the clichà © one might expect at this point, research did nothing to change my apathy towards this essay. I wrote down the standard encyclopedic style biography that defined the efforts of most of my fellow classmates. After all of us were through embarrassing ourselves by reading said biographies in front of the class in the usual self-conscious manner that defines high school presentations, I felt no different. It was clear that Anderson cared deeply about the work that he did in his lifetime, but I certainly didnââ¬â¢t. The self-imposed mediocrity continued uninterrupted by tenth grade English, as I expected. Shortly after this assignment, Mrs. D continued her Tenth grade English syllabus with a Unit on ââ¬Å"Appreciating Poetryâ⬠which was equally if not less exciting than the essay I had completed on Sherwood Anderson. The wizened and possibly wigged (or so the rumors went) Mrs. D saw to it that our first assignment in appreciating the art of poetry was that we were all to write poems of our own and once again embarrass ourselves in front of the class through recitation. Enter the predictable protagonal change. My poem was quite short and completely free verse, of course. But as I wrote it, I started to care how it sounded in my head and when I re... ...g, I probably would not have listened. This was most certainly something that I had to come to on my own. The only method to reach this plateau was writing on my own, and as much as I could. The key realization being that language was not some powerful structure that I could just tap into every now and again, but instead it was a set of signs that were in my complete control and jurisdiction to manipulate in a way that would reach readers, and more importantly myself, in an emotional way. The power lay not within the words, but in my ability to use them. In essence, these experiences with writing teachers did not affect me in and of themselves. The combined lessons on writing from all of my teachers, coupled with my own fascination with the power and effectiveness of words and language, brought me to the point I am at now: with writing as an integral part of my life.

Gender Archaeology Essay
Gender archaeology is a field of study that encompasses different approaches in the study of gender. It developed in the 1980s at the time feminist movement emerged in many societies including America and Britain questioning the male bias of the mainstream archaeology. Gender plays a significant role in constructing society and its values, categorizing which are female or male roles, and creating meanings and identity. However, studying the concept of gender is difficult as its meaning is influenced by many factors and relationships in the society. Arguments are raised that gender, unlike the biological sex, does not exist and complicated to test through archaeology. One of the traditional approaches in studying gender is through material culture where tangible evidences are correlated with the presence of men and women such as artefacts and tools excavated, suggesting a representation of the two genders and their activities (Shaw and Jameson 2000: 251). The productive use of material culture is one of the most significant contributions of archaeologists unlike other disciplines which ignore the potentials of material and its symbolic representations and meaning construction of gender (Bintliff 2004:85). Scholars should recognize the relevance of material culture as it is able to correlate the objects and its physical realities and consequences to gender, allowing varied ways of exploring an object or material. It provides resources for reference and medium for practice of gender. It aids the study of gender archaeology in all geographical regions, categories of material culture, and periods (Gilchrist 1999: 15). One of the research methods used in studying material culture is a case study, which is also commonly used in feminist archaeology, where archaeologist become ethnographers. They visit the site or region of analysis aiming to reconstruct the past societies with as much details as possible about the past peopleââ¬â¢s lifestyle, customs, traditions, beliefs, and other events (Nelson 2006: 45). In this way, history of people and its meanings are identified through material evidences which represent relationship to gender. Numerous studies have revealed astounding facts and evidence leading to an understanding on how the meanings of gender and its facets are identified. Many pre-historical studies have been conducted around the world in knowing how men and women are represented, particularly in artefacts, and how these representations construct or deconstruct the roles of each gender. In a study, Ungendering Archaeology: Concepts of Sex and Gender in Figurine Studies in Prehistory, Naomi Hamilton analysed and interpreted the prehistoric anthromorphic figurines from Eastern Europe and the Near East (Donald and Hurcombe 2000: 18). Hamilton devised as methodology to identify sex on the figures and analyse the stereotypes attached to it regarding Western gender roles. There were numerous figurines unearthed from Europe but the interpretations are different and sometimes contradicting. Some scholars argue that these figures, particularly those with women, represents ââ¬Ëgoddess worshipââ¬â¢ but others did not agree. According to Hamilton, there is a need for a theory on gender and gender relations that would at least provide better explanations than the traditional studies. For any unfamiliar figure, it would be easier to assume that a certain object represents a male or a female goddess or creature but others might interpret it differently. In Seklo group from Greece, for example, an excavator thought of the distorted figure with womanly shape as representation of female centaur while other objects resembling male figure are assumed as enthroned men. Later, the female-like figure was interpreted in different views: seated figure, goddess, or female on a birth stool. These varied translations happen most of the times because, as Hamilton argued, archaeologists readily accept that aspects of human life have universal characteristics such that what is commonly associated with women in another region or era is assumed to be similar in another region of different period (Donald and Hurcombe 2000: 28). Hamilton argued that the ambiguity the two mutually exclusive genders (male and female) and its resemblance to historical Western societies have not been questioned. Traditional assumptions on these figurines readily announced as representation of sex and gender roles and not other things. Besides, interpretations are based conservative view on gender. Archaeologists assumed that there is a standard gender division in culture but anthropologists say otherwise. In many historical figurines, most represent female as it was how assumed by archaeologists. It must be that male is not so superior in the old times than now. Obviously, there are difficulties and contrasting views on identifying which gender figurines stand for. Hence it is important to consider not to identify each figure as sex symbol only but also gather other information on culture to avoid pre-conceive notions that men or women are represented in such matter for a period of time and also to avoid stereotypes on the roles of women. Research on gender might suffer if there is a strong bias on either gender or gender differences. The assumption that every culture has standard or similar male-female divisions of characteristics might lead to building a gender based on stereotypes (Hamilton 2004). These might influence on how men and women are viewed today and how their roles are determined in every aspects of life such as family, politics, or academe. Hamiltonââ¬â¢s study on figurines has a plausible argument that the traditional assumptions of archaeologists have made conclusions that are inaccurate and lacks credibility. This is an important consideration since these kind of assumptions lead to opposing views damaging or overrating either gender especially women who has been, for a long time, regarded as subordinate to men.
